Summer Witchery

If there's any season that seems to almost universally be thought of as non-witchy, it's summer. Okay, maybe a little over dramatic there, but honestly! Summer seems to get a bit of a bad rep among witches for the immense heat. Now, I'm not gonna lie, I'd die without AC in the summer. I hate sweating and I hate sunburns- both things I'm prone to, of course.
However... I love the energy of summer. Maybe it's cause I lack fire in my chart? Who knows! All I know is I love summer nights, filled with stars and fireflies, and swimming in lakes and oceans, not thinking of what needs to be done. I love Aphrodisia and Lunasa, I'm still waiting for my dapper butch Leo girlfriend to show up. I love the flowy dresses and summer bops. And let's be real- you're more likely to catch me in pink button downs and tulle skirts than all black anyway.
Still, I'm here to prove that summer is just as witchy as fall if you try. Let's talk a bit about some of the magic you can work in the summer.
flowers and herbs
If there's one benefit of summer for witches, it's gotta be that so much is in bloom right now! I gotta say, I'm already missing the lilacs of spring but I'm not saying no to the other flowers showing up! Roses, peonies, violets, pansies, hydrangeas... basically, I love flowers.
Not to mention herbs! So many herbs are now in season that it's easier than any other time (except maybe spring if you don't live in the Midwest!) to get them. I'm still trying to learn gardening at the moment since I kinda suck at keeping things alive, but with local farmer's markets opening, including one a bike ride's away from me, I'm not too worried about it.
stargazing
While I'll admit I'm partial to the winter sky because of Orion and the Pleiades, summer is far better for actually stargazing. Some of my fondest childhood memories are of laying at the beach at night, watching the stars and admiring the constellations.
If you've never laid in a low-light area and just admired the night sky, you're severely missing out. Yes, I'm probably biased as I'm a total space nerd, but seriously. Even if the science of space somehow doesn't get you, look up some myths behind constellations! Take 15 minutes to just lay and watch the stars, and remember that the light is millions of years old, having taken all that time just to travel to us.
Midsummer
Personally, I consider Midsummer/Litha Aphrodisia as the dates are similar, but seriously how is the summer solstice not up there with Samhain and Yule? Then again, I'll admit I don't know much about Midsummer. Aphrodisia though? That's a party! Sweets, roses, relaxing by water, romance... what can I say, it's the best time of year!
water witchery
I'm biased with water being my favorite element, but summer is the best time for water working. Particularly sea witchcraft, but I'm landlocked as all hell, so I make do with lakes. Now is the season for collecting storm, lake, and ocean water! At least here in Minnesota, where it's frozen the rest of the year. I know I'm looking forward to visiting lakes and getting that awesome energy!
At some point soon here, I'll make a post on working with the darker energies of summer. This may be a season thought of as all light, but you can't have light without shadows, and I'm a huge fan of summer nights.
I also made some free grimoire pages for Aphrodisia over on my tumblr! Feel free to check them out and give a reblog if you use them!
Until then, guidance and clarity find you!
